Rosewood Church was &quot;home base&quot; for about 120 teens and their leaders this summer when we hosted a SERVE 2008 team.  The SERVE week  ran from Saturday, July 12, to Saturday, July 19, 2008. Here&#39;s what we did:
* Helped families in the Bellflower and surrounding communities with minor home repairs and improvements, such as scraping, painting, cleaning yards, and more!
* Did some repairs and improvements to area non-profit organizations that help people who are disadvantaged.

Our theme this summer was &quot;Right the Wrong,&quot; and our speaker was Cisco Gonzalez from Grand Rapids, Mich. Cisco is the director of student life at Kuyper College (formerly RBC) and member of the preaching team at Madison Square Church. SERVE is a mission project sponsored by an organization called Youth Unlimited based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. SUNDAY MORNING CELEBRATIONS

Join us for either an early-morning or mid-morning worship time: the first begins at 8:30, and the second at 10:30. During every service we offer a full menu of group options for our children: Nursery care for infants through 2-year-olds, and &quot;Promiseland&quot; for Preschool through 8th graders in which we teach the &quot;Walk With Me&quot; program of Christian discipleship.   After each service, we have an informal coffee time on the west lawn, where we mingle and get to know one another better. 

SPANISH SPEAKERS INVITED

Rosewood&#39;s Hispanic Ministry offers a Spanish-language worship service in the Social Hall nearly every Sunday. On the last Sunday of the month (whether it&#39;s the 4th or 5th Sunday), we all worship together with Spanish translation through headsets and a multicultural emphasis. 

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MINISTRIES

The Rosewood Campus is bustling with activity on Wednesday night from September through May, as we offer our GEMS Club for girls in 1st-7th grades, our Cadets Club for  boys in 2nd-6th grade, a Spanish-language Bible study for adults, a basic Bible study for Women, and nursery care/story time for young children. All activities take place from 6:30-8:00 p.m. 

During five weeks of summer (from late June through July), we offer Summer Family Nights every Wednesday night for children through adults. Come check it out!

The Cadets meet every Wednesday night in the Rosewood Church social hall from 6:30-8:00 p.m.  They keep busy with active games, Bible study and prayer, great treats, and projects such as fire-building, archery, marksmanship, flag-raising, and more.  Every fall our Cadets participate in Field Day, however this year it has been moved to late spring,  where they compete with Cadet clubs from all over Southern California in a variety of activities.  In the spring, the boys participate in Pinewood Derby cars, in which they race the cars they have carved out of wood and painted.  Cadets is a great place for boys to be mentored by adult Christian men and to learn more about what it means to live out the Christian faith. What is love? Christ summed up all 10 commandments with just two, &quot;Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.&quot; (Mat 22:37-40) So if the most important laws to follow deal with love, don&#39;t you think it is vitally important to have a good understanding of what love really is? A lot of times we say &quot;I love pizza&quot; or &quot;I love the Lakers&quot; using the same word we use when we say I love God. That doesn&#39;t seem right. That is why there were so many words for love in both the Hebrew and Greek languages. It is helpful to remember that there are different kinds of love for us too. God&#39;s love for example is the most important love of all. His love is not &quot;I love you if&quot; or &quot;I love you because&quot; but rather &quot;I love you no matter what&quot;. In fact, God tells us that while we were still sinners, that is when he came down from heaven and lived out his biggest act of love yet. While we were garbage, God viewed us as indispensable. I guess the old saying is true - &quot;One mans trash is another man&#39;s treasure&quot;, or our God&#39;s treasure. Praise Jesus! </description>

A Ministry Profile

* To teach children in the secondary level of school in the country of Pohnpei, Micronesia.

* Although each volunteer&#39;s primary responsibility is to teach, you are also encouraged to engage in programs or projects outside of your assigned classes. You may choose to participate in or lead extracurricular activities, do after-school tutoring, run after-school clubs, or something else depending on your time, your interests and talents, and local needs.

* The education system in Pohnpei is far from perfect, with many glaring weaknesses and needs. Working in these schools can be immensely frustrating at times, as you discover one problem after another inhibiting the students&#39; learning, but seeing your students understand and grasp new concepts can be one of the most exciting, challenging, and rewarding experiences imaginable. 

* Often the problems you discover seem like they can be easily solved but you&#39;ll quickly find that it is impossible to turn a school around overnight. It just takes patience, dedication, hard work and perseverance. 

* Housing: Teachers are placed in teacher housing or with families. Housing tends to be simple but comfortable. The Call: 

A young couple feeling the call of the Lord to Serve Him overseas. They have decided to answer that call and leave their ministries and secure jobs here to see what the Lord has in store for their future. Roger is also a son of Rosewood, and Roger &amp; Karen are Rosewood&#8217;s longest-standing missionaries. Serving with Wycliffe Translators, they led a team for 20 years that translated the New Testament into Kifuliru, the language of the Bafuliru people in the D.R.Congo. The Van Otterloos now live in Nairobi, Kenya, doing advanced linguistic work that will facilitate the translation of the Bible into many other languages in the southern half of Africa. They are directly dependent upon the gifts of God&#8217;s people for their salary.

Scott and Marcia are church planters in Tijuana, Mexico where their ministry is bearing much fruit. They have planted two worshipping congregations in the last 15 years and are working on a third, in addition to some 10 ministries or missions. They are indirectly dependent upon our financial support, since they are salaried by CRC World Missions but are required to raise a portion of their own support.

On January 27, 2008,  our congregation welcomed Scott and Marcia Geurink as our guests for the day. The Geurinks shared a few pictures and brief testimony about their work during both of our our morning English services--including the adult service and the children&#39;s worship time (Promiseland). The children presented them with a check from the offerings they had been collecting since fall. Scott also preached at our 10:30 Spanish-language service, which was followed by a pot-luck lunch with the Hispanic congregation. In the evening we invited the Geurinks back to show a few more pictures, tell a bit more about their ministry, answer questions from the congregation, and fellowship over some goodies. We took an offering for the Geurink&#39;s ministry support and discussed other ways Rosewood can partner with and support them in their efforts.</description>

<title>Kevin &amp; Michelle Suwyn - Young Life in Costa Rica - Missionary News</title>

In November 2007 Rosewood Church received a letter from Greg McDonald, who, along with his wife, Lynn, support the mission work Kevin &amp; Michelle Suwyn do through Young Life in Costa Rica. Greg also has come alongside Kevin as a volunteer to assist in managing their fund raising efforts so that they can stay focused on ministering to the kids of Costa Rica. Below is an edited summary of Greg&#39;s update on the Suwyn Family. 

THE BACKGROUND
It is exciting to see the countless young lives that are being touched for Jesus through Kevin &amp; Michelle&#39;s work abroad. Nonetheless, the medical challenges that Michelle &amp; Kevin have experienced with Samara over the past 24 months, have certainly taken a toll on them emotionally, physically, and financially. On October 1, Michelle &amp; Samara began another extended stay (45 days) in the States at the Feeding &amp; Swallowing Clinic of Children&#39;s Hospital in Philadelphia. Their goal is to teach Samara to accept and eat food orally as she is currently fed through a G-tube.

THE CHALLENGE
As you might expect, Kevin &amp; Michelle have become very good at surviving the unexpected medical and travel expenses associated with Samara&#39;s condition. An example is their current trip to Philadelphia. Michelle is staying at the Ronald McDonald house next to the hospital for $15.00 per night; friends are working on car lending options for Michelle. Nonetheless they still have incurred airfare of $1,025 for Michelle &amp; Samara and another $1,318 for Noah &amp; Elijah to visit their Mom one time during their 45 day stay in Philadelphia. Additionally Kevin also needs to receive a week of parent training from the clinic. This still doesn&#39;t account for transportation expenses to &amp; from the airport, travel, food costs etc. When you layer this on top of the $13,000 out-of-pocket medical expenses they have incurred since Samara was born, you can quickly see the challenge facing Kevin and Michelle.

THE OPPORTUNITY
We think that the people and churches that support Kevin &amp; Michelle and family would like to help. As of April 15, 2007, Rev. Fernando and Miriam Valencia have joined the ministry staff as full-time pastor couple for the Spanish-Language ministries. Fernando and Miriam moved to Southern California from Mexico, where they both taught at the Presbyterian Seminary in Mexico City. Rev. Valencia has also pastored several churches in Mexico. We are so thankful for their presence on our staff and in our church community.

The Valencia&#39;s lead the Spanish-language worship service three to four Sundays a month; a Bible Study every Wednesday night; a Prayer Meeting every Friday night; and partner with staff in hosting outreach events and church events. They also spend much of their time visiting and praying with families, and ministering to people at Rosewood&#39;s food pantry ministry each Friday.</description>

For us every new day presents a new opportunity to add fragrance to the offering and bring glory to God. A day offered to God is a good day, even if we seem to be losing the game as people play it.
The everyday life of the Philippian congregation constitutes a &quot;sacrifice and offering of faith&quot; to God. And on that altar some drops of wine are sprinkled. That libation is Paul&#39;s life, which is slowly spent for God and for the benefit of his church. When Paul&#39;s eyes see (not merely the prison walls, but) the altars of God being lit around the Mediterranean Sea, he feels deep joy. &quot;I am glad,&quot; he writes, &quot;and you should be glad too.&quot;
In the old tabernacle, the sacrifice of praise to God was lit in the morning and evening. The lamb was sacrificed, the flour sprinkled, the wine poured out. It was &quot;an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord&quot; (Numbers 28:8). Today that offering is burning on all five continents. The world takes no notice. But God is pleased. And you and I rejoice.
And if your &amp; my contributions have added to the flames of some altars, we couldn&#39;t have put our lives to better use.

Our hope today, like Jeremiah&#39;s hope long ago, is in the Lord alone.  Every one of us needs a Savior. God has provided One. God is faithful, and he has not changed his mind about providing us new mercies each morning. It seemed like such a &#8220;God thing&#8221; that this Word would &#8220;just happen&#8221; to come on this particular day, even though it was written months ago by someone who does not know us.  It strengthened my heart, and I wanted to share it with you too. Pastor BrinkGOD NEVER GIVES UP!&quot;He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion ... &quot;   Philippians 1:6One day a mother whose 25-year-old son had turned his back on God was telling me she had given up on her son. After years of praying for him and trying to convince him that he needed the Lord in his life, she was sure that God had written him off. She had decided no longer to pray for him. It was one of the saddest things I&#39;d ever heard: a parent giving up on a child.I told her how glad I was that God never gives up on us. If he did, you and I would not stand a chance. If I would have had to hang on to God throughout my life, I would be hopeless. The only reason I am who I am today and the only reason I am where I am in my walk with the Lord is that God refused long ago to give up on me. If it were up to us to stay close to God then things fell apart, we would be lost.Thank God for his assurance in Philippians 1:6: &quot;He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.&quot; God never gives up. It&#39;s the most beautiful assurance we have. Even when we are tempted to let go, God refuses to give up. Spring - Easter Egg Hunt &amp; Mini Carnival

On the Saturday before Easter, the Rosewood Campus is packed with children and families celebrating the Easter season! We begin the day with a Free Pancake Breakfast for everyone, followed by Easter Egg Hunts for the children and a Mini-Carnival complete with game booths, a bounce house, face painting, and lots of candy and prizes. 

Summer - Summer Family Nights

For five weeks of the summer (end of June through end of July), we dedicate our Wednesday nights to getting families together to celebrate and learn more about God. We start out each Wednesday evening with a free dinner for all families, followed by a big-group worship time including music and drama, then a menu of small groups for all ages. The children participate in a Vacation Bible School type program, the youth form small groups and go through a practical life theme, and the adults can choose from a menu of classes ranging from Bible studies to cooking to crafts.

Summer - TGIF Clubs 

We bring our Bible classes right into the city parks and backyards of Bellflower, as our TGIF (Together Growing in Faith) teams lead small groups of children for 4-5 weeks. Featuring Bible story dramas, singing, memory verses, crafts, and treats, our TGIF Clubs have provided a great way for children and their families to take a safe &quot;first step&quot; into the family of God.

Fall - Outrageous Pumpkin Party

Every year on October 31st, the Rosewood Church campus transforms into an Outrageous Pumpkin Party! We&#39;ve welcomed more than 1,000 people to this event each year by offering a safe, fun, Christian alternative to Halloween activities -- without sacrificing any of the positive aspects of gathering lots of sweets to eat. The O.P.P. features a photo booth, bounce house, at least 20 game booths, a cake walk, face painting, a scary maze crawl, goldfish giveaways, and treasure sacks full of candy and prizes. The past two years we&#39;ve also given away Bibles to participants, and offered an opportunity to submit prayer requests and sign up for ministries. The O.P.P. is our biggest family event of the year!

Fall/Winter - Children&#39;s Christmas Musical

From October through mid-December, some 60-70 children get together every week to prepare for the annual Children&#39;s Christmas Musical. Under the direction of Mrs. Kay Van Weerthuizen, the children (ranging from K-6th grades) learn at least a dozen songs and motions, plus drama parts, and do an incredible job of leading the adults in a night of worship (usually the 3rd Sunday in December).</description>

We have an outstanding team of young adults and adults who are committed to partnering with parents in nurturing the growing faith of children. Although our team of volunteers may not all be professional teachers (some actually are!), each leader has met the core requirements: loving God and loving children. In our Sunday morning and our midweek ministries, we use The Bible as our source for all of our teaching and coaching. Embassy is our High School group.  If you have never been there to check it out, swing by this Thursday at 7:00 pm and see what we are all about.  If you are the type that needs a little idea of what to expect...I totally understand.  Embassy was designed to give today&#39;s High School youth a chance to relax and get away.  The group is designed, not to attack individuals who struggle with sin, addiction or pain but rather to come along side and live life with you and you with us.  We have a great team of leaders who have rather recently been through a lot of the same stuff teens see on a daily basis.  We want to give you a safe place to be you, no masks, no strings, no gimicks.  Check out Embassy this Thursday!  I would love to see you there.

If you are a newcomer, here is a taste of what you can expect...An outside DJ comes in to play hours of today&#39;s dance and hip hop music, but don&#39;t worry, if dancing is not your thing, you can join in on a game of basketball, fooseball, ping pong, billiards, or just hang out a have a free slice of pizza with all of your friends. The Food Pantry is a growing ministry at Rosewood. 

Every Friday, from 3-4 p.m. we distribute food to 20-30 families from the Bellflower School District. A Social Worker or Case Worker must refer all patrons of the Food Pantry from one of the schools in the District.  If you do not have a child in school, you can contact the Thomas Jefferson School Case Worker to receive a referral slip.  Their phone number is (562) 804-6521.  

All food is packaged and canned. We don&#39;t receive fresh produce to be distributed on a regular basis, but sometimes we are fortunate enough to receive potatoes, lettuce and other fruits and vegetables.   Donations are welcome, however we don&#39;t have the facilities to store anything perishable.  Please call the Church Office if you would like to make a donation and we can give you the information as to when and where to deliver it.

The Food Pantry is open every Friday from 3-4 p.m. from September to June.  We are closed the week of Thanksgiving and the 2 weeks between Christmas and New Years.  For information regarding the summer schedule, you can contact the Church Office at (562) 804-4778.</description>
